Sam Battan

As the founder of the Colorado Youth Congress, Sam Battan organizes diverse communities of young people to drive inclusive systems-level change. Growing up in the segregated suburbs of Denver, Sam's eyes were opened to the realities of poverty and racism when he moved to New Orleans in 2011 to teach at an alternative high school designed for overage students. It was there he found his passion in helping young people develop agency as they change the world around them. Sam was honored as the district's High School Teacher of the Year for his students' high levels of civic engagement and academic achievement. In addition to being a seven-year educator, Sam takes pride in being a community organizer -- he is the co-founder of Equity Network United for Metro Denver and ONE NOLA, and has served as the education chair for the Welcome Table, the mayor's initiative for racial reconciliation.
